Email, SMS and direct-message marketing for aesthetic treatments in Japan

General market orientation, not campaign clearance. Research scope and dates

Product and service rules

Medical and dental advertising is not ordinary consumer promotion

Regulator guidance

Medical Care Act advertising rules cover medical and dental practice, hospitals and clinics, including qualifying websites. Check the permitted-information rules and any website exemption conditions, alongside prohibitions on false or exaggerated claims and misleading superiority.

Testimonials and treatment images have specific restrictions

Regulator guidance

Subjective patient testimonials about treatment content or effects are prohibited. Before-and-after images must not mislead about effects. The sixth-edition examples reject subjective patient experience as a substitute for adequate risk information.

For self-pay treatment, explain usual treatment content, duration and sessions, standard cost, and principal risks and adverse effects. Patient consent alone does not make prohibited advertising lawful.

Channel rules

Check the complete consumer-facing message

Regulator guidance

The misleading-representations regime covers goods and services, including misleading impressions about quality or price advantages. Review the full presentation and offer conditions. A truthful individual detail does not justify a deceptive overall claim.

Check the specified-email opt-in regime

Regulator guidance

Advertising email generally follows an opt-in model with defined exceptions. Review consent records, sender identification and refusal handling under the applicable email and distance-selling rules. Do not assume every SMS or platform direct message has the same legal treatment.

Separate promotional and service messages

Editorial recommendation

Review the rules for the actual delivery method: email, SMS and private social messages are not interchangeable. Keep the relevant permission record, accurate sender details and a working suppression process.

Campaign workflow

Aesthetic Medicine & Cosmetic Procedures: prepare the review

Editorial recommendation

Separate the procedure, clinic, device, cosmetic and prescription medicine in the offer. Check restrictions on injectables and other products even when the headline advertises a consultation. Review realistic outcomes, risks, patient images and time-limited offers.

Keep a traceable campaign decision

Editorial recommendation

Keep one review record linking the offer, local market status, claim evidence, exact creative, media settings and any regulatory or professional clearance. Record who checked each condition. Reopen the review when the offer, claim, source rule or execution changes.

Pre-publication checklist

  • Separate the procedure, clinic, device, cosmetic and prescription medicine in the offer.
  • Check restrictions on injectables and other products even when the headline advertises a consultation.
  • Review realistic outcomes, risks, patient images and time-limited offers.
  • Record product or provider eligibility before approving claims.
  • Archive the final creative and its evidence, permissions and review decisions.
  • Assign an owner for source updates, complaints and prompt withdrawal of inaccurate material.

Scope and unresolved questions

  • March 2026 sixth-edition medical advertising examples, website exemption conditions and FFC transitions have been checked. Remaining checks concern prefectural implementation, practitioner-specific and pharmacy requirements, actual product notifications and treatment disclosures, personal-information processing and each messaging technology. This pack does not supply every Japanese mandatory warning text.
  • This national baseline does not review every broadcaster rule, platform policy, regional licensing condition, promotion mechanic or data-transfer arrangement. No format-specific warning dimensions or durations should be inferred where none are supplied.
Research scope, introduction and dates

An aesthetic campaign by email, SMS and direct messages in Japan can advertise a clinic while also implying claims about a procedure, device or prescription medicine. Separate those elements first, then review outcome images, risks and commercial pressure.

Email, SMS and private platform messages can follow different permission rules. Identify the delivery technology and the recipient relationship, then review the promotional content and withdrawal process separately.
