Advertising aesthetic treatments on websites in Japan

Product and service rules

Medical and dental advertising is not ordinary consumer promotion

Regulator guidance

Medical Care Act advertising rules cover medical and dental practice, hospitals and clinics, including qualifying websites. Check the permitted-information rules and any website exemption conditions, alongside prohibitions on false or exaggerated claims and misleading superiority.

Testimonials and treatment images have specific restrictions

Regulator guidance

Subjective patient testimonials about treatment content or effects are prohibited. Before-and-after images must not mislead about effects. The sixth-edition examples reject subjective patient experience as a substitute for adequate risk information.

For self-pay treatment, explain usual treatment content, duration and sessions, standard cost, and principal risks and adverse effects. Patient consent alone does not make prohibited advertising lawful.

Apply the website exemption conditions individually

Regulator guidance

The exemption from the ordinary list of advertisable matters requires information actively sought by the patient, accessible contact details, and adequate self-pay treatment/cost and principal risk/adverse-effect information. A website label alone does not establish eligibility.

Unapproved or off-label treatment needs additional disclosures covering approval status, procurement, domestic approved alternatives, overseas safety and applicability of the adverse-drug-reaction relief scheme. The exemption does not remove prohibitions on misleading claims or treatment testimonials.

Check the complete consumer-facing message

Regulator guidance

The misleading-representations regime covers goods and services, including misleading impressions about quality or price advantages. Review the full presentation and offer conditions. A truthful individual detail does not justify a deceptive overall claim.

Review the whole website journey

Editorial recommendation

Review the product card, metadata, testimonials, booking page and checkout together. Archive the published version and check third-party widgets after updates.

Aesthetic Medicine & Cosmetic Procedures: prepare the review

Editorial recommendation

Separate the procedure, clinic, device, cosmetic and prescription medicine in the offer. Check restrictions on injectables and other products even when the headline advertises a consultation. Review realistic outcomes, risks, patient images and time-limited offers.

Keep a traceable campaign decision

Editorial recommendation

Keep one review record linking the offer, local market status, claim evidence, exact creative, media settings and any regulatory or professional clearance. Record who checked each condition. Reopen the review when the offer, claim, source rule or execution changes.

Pre-publication checklist

  • Separate the procedure, clinic, device, cosmetic and prescription medicine in the offer.
  • Check restrictions on injectables and other products even when the headline advertises a consultation.
  • Review realistic outcomes, risks, patient images and time-limited offers.
  • Record product or provider eligibility before approving claims.
  • Archive the final creative and its evidence, permissions and review decisions.
  • Assign an owner for source updates, complaints and prompt withdrawal of inaccurate material.

Scope and unresolved questions

  • March 2026 sixth-edition medical advertising examples, website exemption conditions and FFC transitions have been checked. Remaining checks concern prefectural implementation, practitioner-specific and pharmacy requirements, actual product notifications and treatment disclosures, personal-information processing and each messaging technology. This pack does not supply every Japanese mandatory warning text.
  • This national baseline does not review every broadcaster rule, platform policy, regional licensing condition, promotion mechanic or data-transfer arrangement. No format-specific warning dimensions or durations should be inferred where none are supplied.
Research scope, introduction and dates

An aesthetic campaign on websites in Japan can advertise a clinic while also implying claims about a procedure, device or prescription medicine. Separate those elements first, then review outcome images, risks and commercial pressure.

On a website, the headline, product card, testimonial, embedded video and booking or checkout page all contribute to the message. Follow the rules below across that journey, rather than reviewing the landing-page text in isolation.

How to use this national baseline

Editorial overview

This framework combines researched national rules with editorial review steps. Japanese product and medical-service advertising baseline; local and product-specific implementation requires review. A visible channel workflow does not establish that the selected product or service may be advertised there. Read the category restrictions first.

The review date identifies when the cited provisions or regulator excerpts were checked. It does not mean that every local rule, exception, professional standard or platform policy has been reviewed.

Your next step: choose a local partner
