Notification of a functional food is not government approval
Regulator guidance
Foods with Function Claims use a notification route in which the operator is responsible for the scientific basis. This differs from FOSHU individual review. Identify the actual food category, permitted or notified statement and applicable conditions; do not advertise a notified product as government-approved medicine.

Check the post-transition FFC dossier
Regulator guidance
FFC reforms phase in adverse-event reporting from September 2024 and revised notification arrangements from April 2025. The transition for revised labelling and GMP requirements for specified natural-extract tablet/capsule products ended on 31 August 2026. Check whether the actual product falls within those requirements.
Verify the current notification, evidence, label and withdrawal status. Notification is not government approval of efficacy or safety; do not turn a function claim into a disease-treatment claim.

Check the complete consumer-facing message
Regulator guidance
The misleading-representations regime covers goods and services, including misleading impressions about quality or price advantages. Review the full presentation and offer conditions. A truthful individual detail does not justify a deceptive overall claim.

Advertiser-directed content must be recognisable as advertising
Regulator guidance
CAA’s stealth-marketing rule addresses a supplying advertiser involved in determining a representation whose commercial nature consumers cannot recognise. Assess the brand’s role in the content and the overall presentation, including commissioned posts and reviews.
An influencer acting only as the commissioned publisher is generally not the regulated advertiser under this particular designation; CAA identifies joint supply of the product as an exception. This does not exempt the content from product-advertising law or other duties.

Review the audio without visual support
Editorial recommendation
Check product eligibility and applicable radio requirements. Listen at normal speed to the whole spot, including warnings and sponsorship language. A website address does not automatically replace spoken mandatory information.

Food Supplements: prepare the review
Editorial recommendation
Determine whether the local category is food, natural health product, medicine or another regulated class. Match each claim to the local permitted or notified wording and its composition and use conditions. Assess captions, testimonials and images for an implied treatment or prevention claim.
Keep a traceable campaign decision
Editorial recommendation
Keep one review record linking the offer, local market status, claim evidence, exact creative, media settings and any regulatory or professional clearance. Record who checked each condition. Reopen the review when the offer, claim, source rule or execution changes.
Pre-publication checklist
- Determine whether the local category is food, natural health product, medicine or another regulated class.
- Match each claim to the local permitted or notified wording and its composition and use conditions.
- Assess captions, testimonials and images for an implied treatment or prevention claim.
- Record product or provider eligibility before approving claims.
- Archive the final creative and its evidence, permissions and review decisions.
- Assign an owner for source updates, complaints and prompt withdrawal of inaccurate material.
Scope and unresolved questions
- March 2026 sixth-edition medical advertising examples, website exemption conditions and FFC transitions have been checked. Remaining checks concern prefectural implementation, practitioner-specific and pharmacy requirements, actual product notifications and treatment disclosures, personal-information processing and each messaging technology. This pack does not supply every Japanese mandatory warning text.
- This national baseline does not review every broadcaster rule, platform policy, regional licensing condition, promotion mechanic or data-transfer arrangement. No format-specific warning dimensions or durations should be inferred where none are supplied.
Research scope, introduction and dates
Food-supplement promotion in radio spots in Japan begins with local classification. A product sold as a supplement elsewhere may follow a different health-product route here; check the applicable claim conditions before adapting testimonials or benefit statements.
A radio spot must communicate its meaning without supporting visuals. Listen to the final voiceover at ordinary playback speed and allow enough airtime for the information and any warning applicable to the advertised offer.
General market orientation, not legal, regulatory or medical advice, a complete compliance plan or clearance of an advertisement. Actual requirements depend on the specific offer and campaign.
How to use this national baseline
Editorial overview
This framework combines researched national rules with editorial review steps. Japanese product and medical-service advertising baseline; local and product-specific implementation requires review. A visible channel workflow does not establish that the selected product or service may be advertised there. Read the category restrictions first.
The review date identifies when the cited provisions or regulator excerpts were checked. It does not mean that every local rule, exception, professional standard or platform policy has been reviewed.
