Influencer marketing for prescription medicines in the United Kingdom

Prescription-only medicines cannot be promoted to the public
Regulator guidance
Public advertising of prescription-only medicines is prohibited. A clinic or consultation advertisement must not become indirect promotion of a prescription product. Review medicine content and territorial authorisation under the MHRA guidance before considering the channel.

Do not use waiting lists to promote unlicensed or prescription weight-loss medicines
Regulator guidance
Applies when: The offer concerns prescription or unlicensed weight-management medicines.
The June 2026 joint warning expressly identifies promotion of pipeline weight-management products, waiting lists and newly licensed oral GLP-1 medicines. Product novelty or a waiting-list sign-up does not remove the public-advertising restriction.
Assess the overall message of a clinic or pharmacy campaign, including indirect medicine references and its linked destination.

Check current licence territory after the Windsor changes
Regulator guidance
From 1 January 2025 medicines are generally authorised UK-wide. Existing PLGB licences generally became UK-wide without changing their number, so the prefix alone is not evidence of GB-only scope. Verify the actual licence and current product information; an EU authorisation no longer supplies the former Northern Ireland basis. UK-wide authorisation does not remove the prohibition on public prescription-medicine advertising.

Check the complete consumer-facing message
Regulator guidance
The DMCC consumer-protection regime addresses misleading claims, deceptive overall presentation and material omissions. Support factual statements with evidence and present important conditions in time for an informed decision. Review prices, qualifications and commercial intent alongside the health-sector requirements.

Make the commercial message identifiable upfront
Regulator guidance
Apply the ASA/CAP/CMA guidance to paid, controlled and other commercial creator content. Use clear advertising identification that the audience notices before engaging; a brand mention alone may not suffice. Product-specific endorsement restrictions remain applicable.

Brief the creator on the permitted message
Editorial recommendation
Check whether endorsements are permitted for the selected offer before contracting a creator. Record payments, gifts and affiliate links; specify the required advertising identification, approved claims, editing controls and takedown process.
Campaign workflow
Prescription Medicines: prepare the review
Editorial recommendation
Identify the exact authorised medicine and prescription status. Resolve the public-promotion restriction or permitted route before developing creative. Separate medicine promotion from neutral disease information and healthcare-service advertising.
Keep a traceable campaign decision
Editorial recommendation
Keep one review record linking the offer, local market status, claim evidence, exact creative, media settings and any regulatory or professional clearance. Record who checked each condition. Reopen the review when the offer, claim, source rule or execution changes.
Pre-publication checklist
- Identify the exact authorised medicine and prescription status.
- Resolve the public-promotion restriction or permitted route before developing creative.
- Separate medicine promotion from neutral disease information and healthcare-service advertising.
- Record product or provider eligibility before approving claims.
- Archive the final creative and its evidence, permissions and review decisions.
- Assign an owner for source updates, complaints and prompt withdrawal of inaccurate material.
Scope and unresolved questions
- Windsor medicine licensing and the GB/NI device distinction are now documented. Verify the exact authorisation, certificate validity, transitional eligibility and destination market. Food-claim transitions, other professional regulators and broadcaster-specific clearance remain separate checks.
- This national baseline does not review every broadcaster rule, platform policy, regional licensing condition, promotion mechanic or data-transfer arrangement. No format-specific warning dimensions or durations should be inferred where none are supplied.
Research scope, introduction and dates
Prescription-medicine advertising through influencer collaborations in the United Kingdom starts with a legal eligibility decision. Establish whether the proposed consumer message is permitted, restricted to limited information or confined to a professional route before developing benefit and risk statements.
Creator selection and commercial disclosure are only part of an influencer review. Examine the person's role, the spoken and visual claims, supplied benefits and the final publication together; a personal experience can still communicate a regulated claim.
General market orientation, not legal, regulatory or medical advice, a complete compliance plan or clearance of an advertisement. Actual requirements depend on the specific offer and campaign.
How to use this national baseline
Editorial overview
This framework combines researched national rules with editorial review steps. UK advertising baseline with a required Great Britain versus Northern Ireland product-regime check. A visible channel workflow does not establish that the selected product or service may be advertised there. Read the category restrictions first.
The review date identifies when the cited provisions or regulator excerpts were checked. It does not mean that every local rule, exception, professional standard or platform policy has been reviewed.
